Emergency Preparedness
Emergencies can happen at any time — from floods and wildfires to earthquakes and power outages. Being prepared can make all the difference in keeping you and your loved ones safe.
This page is your one-stop resource to help you get ready. Whether you're a long-time resident or new to the area, we encourage you to take a few minutes to prepare today.
Stay Informed
Getting timely and accurate information during an emergency can save lives. Make sure you’re signed up for local alerts and know where to turn for updates before, during, and after an event.
- Sign up for SMC Alert – the official emergency notification system for San Mateo County
- Follow the City of East Palo Alto on Instagram, Facebook, and Nextdoor
- Tune in to local radio (e.g. KCBS 740 AM) or TV for updates during emergencies
- Sign up for PG&E Power Outage Alerts
Make a Plan
Emergency situations can unfold quickly. Take time now to talk with your household or family about what you’ll do if there’s a fire, earthquake, flood, or evacuation order. A plan gives everyone peace of mind and a better chance of staying safe.
- Pick a meeting place and emergency contacts
- Know how to evacuate and where to go
- Include pets, children, and elderly family members in your planning
- Start your emergency plan at Ready.gov
Build a Kit
After a disaster, you may need to survive on your own for several days. An emergency supply kit should have everything your family needs to stay safe, healthy, and informed—especially if you lose power or water.
- Water (one gallon per person per day for 3 days)
- Non-perishable food and a manual can opener
- Flashlight, batteries, and a battery-powered or hand-crank radio
- First aid supplies, medications, masks, and sanitation supplies
- Important documents and some cash
- See the full checklist at Ready.gov
- Visit San Mateo County's website to learn more about building your own Emergency Kit
