East Palo Alto Secures Over $580,000 to Install Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations

East Palo Alto, CA – The City of East Palo Alto was awarded $581,060 through the Metropolitan Transportation Commission’s (MTC) Climate Program Implementation Grant to expand public electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure throughout the community.

This funding is part of a regional collaboration led by the County of San Mateo in December 2024, which brought together East Palo Alto, San Carlos, Half Moon Bay, and Portola Valley under the joint proposal: The San Mateo County Regional EV Charging Project: Scaling Accessible and Sustainable Solutions. The proposal included a total of 66 publicly available EV chargers located across the four jurisdictions, 24 of which would be designated for East Palo Alto.

“Expanding electric vehicle charging infrastructure is a critical step in reducing emissions The City is thrilled to receive this grant which will accelerate East Palo Alto’s transition to a cleaner, more sustainable future,” Humza Javed, Public Works Director.

This project prioritized EV charging stations in areas near community and public facilities, such as Cooley Landing, City Hall, and the Senior Center, among others.

In March 2025, MTC approved the joint application, and the City is now entering the Transportation Improvement Program, or TIP process, which involves the MTC’s formal incorporation of this project into its funding schedule. Project initiation is expected to begin within the next 1.5 to 2 years.
