Biking & Scootering

Bikes and scooters, along with e-bikes and e-scooters, are a fast and efficient way to get around the city. You can easily reach nearby destinations like markets, medical clinics, and community centers or to connect with public transit — everyone is within a 3 minute bike ride of a bus route.

See below for more information on getting and maintaining bikes, getting around the city, bike education, and ongoing projects:

Bike access & repair

Whether you’re looking for a first bike or trying to replace a lost or broken one, there may be options to get a bike at low cost.

Live in Peace Bike Shop: Live in Peace is a nonprofit bike shop near Cooley Landing that offers low-cost bikes and bike repair to residents. If you’re interested or want more information, please reach out to bikeshop@liveinpeace.org or visit their website.

Silicon Valley Bike Coalition (SVBC): SVBC is a nonprofit working to promote bike use and safety in the region. They host free bike repair clinics throughout the area — see their website for upcoming workshops.

Used bikes: Buying used or refurbished bikes can be a cheaper and more sustainable alternative to buying new bikes. There are many places to shop for used bikes including local bike-shops, online, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and more — just make sure to check for any issues before purchasing.

E-bikes

Low-income residents may also qualify for significant discounts on e-bikes (electric bikes).

PCE rebates: PCE is will give certain low-income residents rebates of 80% of the cost of their e-bike, up to $1,000. See their website for more details on income limits and to apply.

State rebates: The California E-Bike Incentive Project will offer rebates of $1,000-2,000, depending on the income of the residents and the type of e-bike. This program is currently closed but is expected to open later this year —

check here for the current status.

BAAQMD Car Replacement: The Air District is offering a program for qualified low-income families to trade in their car for up to $7,500 to put towards e-bikes for their families. See their website for more details or to apply.

Bike lanes & parking

The city has made big strides in increasing the amount of bike lanes and bike parking to help make getting around by bike or scooter as smooth as possible. See below for a map of bike lanes and bike parking in the city.

Bike education

Whether you’re just starting to bike or are looking to learn more about bike repair and safety, there are great bike education workshops for all levels.

Silicon Valley Bike Coalition (SVBC): SVBC offers frequent workshops, both in-person and online, for a wide variety of topics including beginner-intermediate bike trainings, bike safety workshops, bike repair trainings, info sessions on e-bikes, and more. Note that many of their in-person trainings are in San Jose. See their website for upcoming events.

Live in Peace Bike Shop: Live in Peace is a local nonprofit bike shop which runs bike events for residents and youth in the community. They host community bike rides on Saturdays in the Spring and Summer among other events — see their website for more info or email bikeshop@liveinpeace.org.

Ongoing projects

Bike lane expansion: The city is continuing to expand the reach of bike lanes throughout the city which have grown to 17.5 miles in total. See here for a map of planned bike lanes or here for the city’s complete Bike Master Plan.

Bike parking expansion: The city is currently working with Live in Peace Bike Shop to plan an expansion of the existing bike parking network to expand coverage to high use areas.
