Recycling at your House

  • Please set out your recycling/yard waste containers by 6 a.m. on your Recycling Day.
  • Recycling is collected every other week.


Mixed Paper Container

Always Recycle:

  • Newspapers and newspaper inserts
  • Unwanted mail (catalogs, envelopes, letters, postcards, junk mail).
  • Magazines, phone books and paperback books.
  • Mixed paper (white and colored paper, manila folders).
  • Paperboard (cereal and dry food boxes, egg cartons, tissue boxes).
  • Paper grocery bags.
  • Coated paper containers, including: milk cartons, juice boxes, and frozen food containers. (Please rinse these items)

NOT Acceptable:

  • Any paper contaminated by food (pizza boxes, paper plates, napkins, and paper towels).
  • Plastic liners from food packaging.
  • Facial tissues.
  • Blueprints, carbonless, and thermal fax paper.
  • Hardcover books.


Bottles & Cans Container

Recycle:

  • Aluminum and bi-metal cans.
  • Glass Bottles and jars.
  • #1 through #7 plastics. PLEASE FLATTEN BOTTLES and remove lids. **
  • Plastic diary containers #1 - #7. **

NOT Acceptable:

  • Film plastics (plastic bags).
  • Light bulbs, mirrors, plate glass, and ceramics.
  • Scrap metal, aluminum foil and foil-wrapped beverage packages.
  • Aerosol spray cans.


Corrugated Cardboard

Cardboard must be flattened and cut no larger than 3-ft by 3-ft. Do not tie or tape together; stack between your recycling containers. No pizza boxes.


Yard Trimmings

Always Recycle - Compost:

  • Grass clippings
  • Plant trimmings
  • Tree Limbs (branches under 2 inches in diameter and less than 4 feet in length)
  • Leaves
  • Ivy
  • Succulents/Ice plant
  • Pine Needles

NOT Acceptable:

  • Trash/Rubbish
  • Palm Fronds or Yucca Plants
  • Food Scraps/Fruits and Vegetable
  • Plastic Bags
  • Sod
  • Poison Oak/Ivy

Need an additional yard waste cart?

Call Allied Waste/BFI at (650) 592-2411 to order an additional yard waste cart, or e-mail us at info@bfipeninsula.com. Your e-mail must indicate whether you want to purchase a container in full for $60, or rent a container for $3 per month. You can obtain a compost bin for your own backyard composting at a discount through the County of San Mateo's Waste Management Program. Go to their website at www.recycleworks.com or call (650) 599-1498 for additional information.


Used Motor Oil

A maximum of two one gallon, clear plastic containers of used motor oil can be recycled. Tape container shut to avoid spills. Do NOT mix with antifreeze, transmission fluid, water or anything else.



If you have more recyclables than can fit into your containers, you can:

  • Put your mixed paper into paper grocery bags.
  • As long as paper is kept separate from commingled bottles, cans and plastics, use any of the recycling bins (no matter how the bin is labeled).
  • Call Allied Waste/BFI at (650) 592-2411 to order additional containers.
