San Francisquito Creek Bridge Replacement

The Project
This project will remove and replace the US-101 bridge over the San Francisquito Creek, at the 
border of San Mateo County and Santa Clara County. The project will also remove and replace the West Bayshore Road and East Bayshore Road bridges over the creek.

The Need
The US-101 bridge over San Franciquito Creek was originally constructed in 1931 and widened in 1957 to include the frontage roads on either side of the freeway. Over the years, the bridge has deteriorated due to wear and tidal action. Based on structural inspections, a recommendation to replace the bridge was made in 2001 and reconfirmed in subsequent inspections.

Due to a history of flooding in this area, the San Francisquito Creek Joint Powers Authority 
(SFCJPA) has proposed improvements to the creek to increase the hydraulic capacity both upstream and downstream of the  US-101 bridge. Since the current  hydraulic capacity of the US-101 and Frontage Road bridges is not the same as the improvements proposed by the SFCJPA, the new bridges are designed to increase the hydraulic capacity to match.

Benefits
This project will replace the existing San Francisquito Creek bridges that are in a deteriorated 
condition and provide increased hydraulic capacity to be consistent with the improvements proposed by the San Francisquito Creek Joint Powers Authority. The new bridges will have less maintenance cost and provide protection from flooding.

Partnership
This project is developed through a partnership with the SFCJPA which includes the cities of Palo Alto, Menlo Park and East Palo Alto, the Santa Clara Valley Water District, the San Mateo County Flood Control District and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).

Project Status
It is expected that a contractor will begin construction Summer 2015. Construction is expected to occur over three seasons with most of the work taking place from June to October due to restricted work windows in the creek.

Project Costs
The  estimated  construction  capital  cost  is  approximately $18 million.
